EACH WEEK WE WILL BE INTERVIEWING AND TALKING TO SOME INCREDIBLE PEOPLE ABOUT THE TOPIC OF MENTAL HEALTH.
THE AIM OF THIS IS TO MAKE MENTAL HEALTH CONVERSATION ACCEPTABLE, PALATABLE AND SHOW THAT IT’S OKAY TO BE YOU!
THIS WEEK WE INTERVIEWED SCOTT WHO IS ONE OF THE DEDICATED GUYS I’VE HAD THE PLEASURE OF TALKING TOO, HE HAS BEEN ONE OF FAMILY FROM DAY ONE.
Who are you and what does the term mental illness mean to you?
So I’m Scott, sales director from London ( bodybuild on the side ) mental illness for me is anything that affects your mood, thinking, behaviour which you can’t control
Why do you think men ESPECIALLY are so reluctant to speak about their mental health?
Great question , we are seen as the providers .. strong tough and no emotion . So to break that barrier of actually admitting we do need help and struggling feels like a failure when in actual fact more people are affected than we think
Do you think today’s society is more accepting of men’s mental health?
Absolutely - brands like yours spread awareness, companies nOw actively encourage men to reach out and seek help . And the “lads lads lads” mentality has changed and I know I can open up.
How do you think COVID has affected mental health?
For me I need a release…. A way to vent ,de stress, and relax away from where anxiety stems from which is normally home and working ….. so over lockdown we worked from home and weren’t allowed out so the problems just got worse , like a pressure cooker
What advice would you give to men reading this now who may be struggling with their mental health?
Reach out as nobody has their shit together , most are just making it all up as they go along I know i do ! Use helplines , go on anonymous forums talk to councillors they do work
Finally what comes to mind when you hear our strap line It's Okay 2be you?
Made me realise how we all try to “put on a happy face” and almost show a perfect version of ourselves to society when in fact that’s not reality and actually just be yourself
Where can people find you on social media
You can find me at Instagram @gibbo4shredz, i’ll talk to all and help where I can.
This just leaves us to say thank you so much to Scott for taking time out to speak to us and share his amazing insights into mental health and as we said.. He’s an incredible guy so please give him a follow!
More next week! :)
